An inspector who reveals a story of the death of a down and out lower class young woman visits the very affluent, upper class Birling family. As the audience discovers, each member of the family has a story to tell about her death. Each story shows how this family hides its secrets that reveal them to be selfish, self-centered, or cowardly.
